I’m a former card counter and poker player with over a million in winnings. When I wanted to change careers I parlayed the invaluable skills I learned on the felt to recruiting. After quickly realizing this unique skillset translated seamlessly to recruiting, I built a team that utilizes my methodology and Parlayed was born. We have been recruiting for almost a decade in a wide variety of industries such as web3, biotech, IT, healthcare, and more.
Just like in poker, recruiting is all about strategy. It's about knowing when to hold 'em (the great employees) and when to fold 'em (the average or bad employees), when to go all in, (the Parlayed candidates), and when to play it safe.
When I started playing poker, I quickly learned that success wasn't just about luck. It was about skill, strategy, and hard work. And the same is true in recruiting. To build a winning team, you must find the right players, cultivate their talents, and create an environment where everyone can thrive.
One of the things that drew me to poker was the challenge of reading my opponents. Every player has their own unique tells, and it's up to you to spot them and use them to your advantage. And in recruiting, it's the same. You need to be able to read people, understand their motivations, and figure out if they're the right fit for your team.
One of my most memorable moments was going all in without looking at my cards, very deep in a huge tournament. This was before optimal poker strategy was widely known and a mentor had given me this advice in between hands. It was correct mathematically and I needed to take the emotion out of my decision by not even looking at the cards. And you know what? I won. That moment taught me that sometimes you need a great coach and also to trust your instincts and take a chance.
